Rebels of the Neon God. October 5, 2020

I wasn’t expecting such an approachable movie from Tsai Ming-liang. Maybe I should’ve started with this one instead of The River.

A lot of the usual Tsai beats are here: sparse dialogue, bad living conditions, lots of water, sex, and a bit of watermelon. The narrative itself is more conventional but it still hit me pretty hard. Now I feel ready to revisit some of his later works (perhaps The Wayward Cloud?).
