I had to laugh when at the end of the movie we’re told that it’s dedicated to Tarkovsky. Of course there are big hints of Tarkovsky throughout the movie, from the themes to the beautiful slow-motion shots. There’s also a certain degree of pretentiousness which is one of my least favorite aspects of Tarkovsky, except that while in a Tarkovsky movie it might make me feel bored, von Trier’s pretentiousness only provokes revulsion and disgust in me. I really didn’t like this contribution, although I enjoyed some of the shots, in particular in the prologue and epilogue.
