Under the Silver Lake. May 16, 2020

This was a lot of fun. It’s hilarious to see Andrew Garfield’s character repeatedly try to Break the Code in order to find some meaning in everything that’s happening around him, only to find more meaninglessness. There’s a lot of little details and references everywhere (including casting choices: for example Patrick Fischler, who’s also in Mulholland Drive), almost like the movie is inviting you to come up with his own theories, although I’m afraid that much like Sam we’ll wind up not learning much from them. This is a movie that both rewards you and mocks you for engaging with it intellectually. It might not be for everyone, but I had a great time.
