The Last Metro. February 3, 2020

Interesting film about entertainment (and more specifically theater) in German-occupied France. Catherine Deneuve (of Repulsion fame) is great, and I always love to see Truffaut’s directing again, but although the film is enjoyable there’s not that much to see here. In particular the romance felt very flat.

I didn’t get the feeling of oppression that I would expect from this kind of movie. Sometimes it seemed like the presence of the Germans was just a slight inconvenience. Given how tired I am of WW2 movies generally, I saw this as a good thing. (Some people have criticized Jojo Rabbit for being way too soft on the nazis. I wonder what they’d say about The Last Metro.)
