My first Jean Vigo. Clearly reminiscent of Man With a Movie Camera, which is not a surprise given this is a collaboration with Boris Kaufman, Dziga Vertov’s brother. There are so many interesting visual metaphors in this very short movie. I also love the little “narrative” of the carnival, starting with the masks being prepared right at the beginning, continuining with the carnival itself, and ending with the masks being burned.
